General Notes: Mattie Murray Gambill
In the late hour of the day on June 9, 1973, Mrs. Mattie Murray Gambill paid the debt that must be paid by each of us. She fell asleep we feel sure, in the arms of Jesus the Savior she adored and worshipped so many years.
On Oct. 1, 1876 a daughter Mattie was born to Aaron and Mary Jennings Murray. At the age of 16 years she joined the Primitive Baptist Church at Jorden and later moved her membership to Elk Creek Primitive Church to which she remained a faithful and devoted member until her death, having been a member of the church for 80 years. She was married to Aaron Gambill in Feb., 1896. He preceded her in death by several years.
To this union were born 6 daughters: Mrs. Grover Reeves, Mrs. Rose Gambill and Mrs. Dean Halsey, all of Sparta, N.C. Mrs Robert Fields, Childersburg. Alabama; Mrs. Bob Queen, Black Mountains, N.C.; Mrs Stuart Medlin, Gatlinburg, Tenn. Also, two sons J.R. Gambill, Sparta, N.C. and Claude Gambill, Lancing, N.C. She is survived by all her children, 16 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, 8 great great grandchildren and many, many friends and neighbors.
Sister Gambill was a quiet lovely lady, so pleasant and friendly and enjoyed so much meeting her friends. She was a busy woman and it was her pleasure to do some kind deed for some one, a very industrious woman and a person of good business and judgement. She attended her church service at every opportunity and filled her seat as long as her health permitted.
In her latter years she was much afflicted and bore it very patiently and appreciated the kindness of her children who cared for her so tenderly and saw that her every need was attended to. We are sure they feel like her death has been a exchange from this vain world to that lovely land to which she has gone. She will behold such beauty and enjoy such peace that we on earth can never imagine.

Everyone called her Maw, and she was a strict disciplinarian. She spent her later years in Spiceland with her son James L. Murray. Shortly before her death in 1961 she was reported to have told her son to "Take Me Home To Virginia". When he asked her why, she told him, "Because I don't want to die in Indiana".

Charles Murray, 88, Greensboro, died early Sunday in Henry County Memorial Hospital following a long illness.
He was born Feb. 13, 1901, in Baywood, VA., the son of John and Peggy (Anders) Murray. He retired in 1965 from Chrysler Corp. after 31 years of employment. He was a member of Greensboro Church of the Nazarene and received its distinguished service award in 1979. He also was honored for having served as Sunday School superintendent for over 30 years.
Survivor are his wife, Ruth; three sons, Herb of Indianapolis, Jim of New Castle and Ron of Shirley; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Donald.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Greensboro Church of the Nazarene with Dr Ross Lee officiating, assisted by the Rev. David Mitchell, the Rev. Douglas Bohall and Morris Smoot. Burial will be in South Mound Cemetery.

Spiceland- James L. Murray, 74, of 410 E. Main St., Spiceland, died Saturday at his home following a long illness.
My Murray was employed at Allison Division of General Motors in Indianapolis for 25 years before retiring in 1976. He had lived in New Castle before moving to Spiceland. He was a member of Spiceland Friends Meeting and a former member of the Spiceland Volunteer Fire Department and the Spiceland Town Board. He was past president of Spiceland Lions Club and former Scout master of Troop 72.
Mr. Murray was also past master of Spiceland Masonic Lodge 699, past worthy patron of Spiceland Order of Eastern Star 563, a member of the Murat Temple, Henry County Shrine Club, Scottish Rite and York Rite. A world War II veteran of the Navy Sea Bees, he was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and Moose Lodge. Born DEC. 3 1919, in Independence, VA., he was a son of James M. and Mallie F. Austin Murray.
Survivors include a daughter, Sandra (Mrs. Phil) Alexander of Fairfield, Ohio; four sons, L.J., Danny and Don all of Spiceland, and Gerald "Jerry" of Daleville; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Ossie Anders of Independence, VA., Lucy Roberts of Galax, VA.,Nan Funk and Minnie Widner, both of Fries, VA.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Murray, in 1969; a son, in 1943; and a daughter, Julie Murray, in 1965.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Main-Frame and Hostetler Funeral Home with Rev. Sid Martin officiating. Burial will be in Circle Grove Cemetery at Spiceland. Friends may call 4-8 p.m. Tuesday. Spiceland Masonic Lodge will conduct services 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Shriner's Crippled Children and Burn Hospital.

Elmer Green, 93, of New Castle died Tuesday at Henry County Memorial Hospital following an extended illness.

General Notes: Mr. Murray, Community leader, dies on Monday
Mr. Cecil J. Murray, 70, a long-time community leader in Allegheny, died Monday shortly before 8 a.m. at his home.
Murray was retired from Lowe's Companies and was also involved in several business and community endeavors.
He helped others get started in business, and helped pay for the students, his friends recalled Monday evening.
"The most outstanding thing about Cecil Murray to me, is of all the things he could have done, he always did them in Alleghany County. He gave a lot of people opportunities they wouldn't other-wise have had," said Harold Church, a long-time friend.
Church credits Murray with giving him a chance to come back and work in his native country. Murray was among a group of investors that purchased the funeral home here and asked Church to come home from Winston-Salam and operate it.
My. Murray was the original chairman of Grandview's board of directors. He was also a charter member of the New River Shrine Club, Church said.
He recalled that Murray always tried to help young people. He remembers a youth who was in trouble that Mr. Murray took under his wing and kept with him for a while.
Murray served in World Was II and began a career at Lowe's afterward, recalled Dr. Jack Ashley, also a long-time friend.
He was one of the original organizers of the Alleghany Inn, Ashley said.
He operated a construction company and also M&M Drug Co., a wholesale distribution business for over-the-counter drugs. He was a former stockholder of the Alleghany News.
Murray was also a leader in the Democratic party and a friend of Gov. Jim Hunt.
Ashley recalled that Murray loved traveling, playing cards and being with his friends.
"Everybody liked Cecil, He was a fine fellow," Ashley said, "He had a world of friends. He was a big friend of troopers who would come to his farm and hunt."
Church said the farm, near where he grew up in Vox community, was one of his greatest loves.
"He never forgot his raising - he never forgot his roots, He was the most loyal man I have ever seen to his mother," he added. He visited her daily after his father died and made sure all her needs were met.
"There's never been another Cecil Murray," he said.
Murray's death was ruled a suicide. He died from a gunshot wound to his head from a .38-caliber pistol, said Medical Examiner Dr. Jack Cahn
Sheriff Mike Caudill said an autopsy at N.C. Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem indicated the wound was consistent with that of a self inflicted wound.
He had been in declining health for several years, according to friends.
Murray, of the Twin Oaks community, is survived by his wife, Mrs. Betty Tompkins Murray of the home; one son, Dan R. Murray of Sparta; two brothers, Troy M. Murray of Sparta and Paige R. Murray of Boone; two grandchildren, Morgan Murray of Sparta and Alex Cavanaugh of Aiken, S.C., two step-grandchildren, Brandon Edwards and Amber Hampton, both of Ennice.
Funeral services were scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 21 at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home Chapel, with Elder Don Richardson officiating and Masonic rites by the Sparta Masonic Lodge No. 423. Burial is in the Zion Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.

Gene Land

Services for William Eugene Land are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Chicago Corner Christian Church. Mr. Land, 70, of New Castle died unexpectedly at his home Tuesday.

He was a 1950 graduate of New Castle High School. He was a U.S. Navy veteran during the Korean War. He was an insurance agent with State Farm Insurance for 39 years in New Castle, owning and operating Gene Land Insurance Agency. He served the Lord for many years at Chicago Corner Christian Church where he was presently serving as elder. He enjoyed golfing and gardening. He was born Sept. 14, 1932, in Cadiz, a son of Walter and Faye Murray Land.

He is survived by his wife, the former Joanne Sidwell, whom he married March 28, 1953; a daughter, Diana (husband: Rex) Spencer of Celina, Ohio; a son, Steve (wife: Loretta) of New Castle; four grandchildren, Katie and Emily Spencer of Celina, Ohio, Todd Land, serving in the U.S. Army stationed in Fort Benning, Ga., and Tara Faye Land of Lewisville; three stepgrandchildren, Joshua Meek of Carthage, Brittney and Courtney Meek of Leesburg; two brothers; and a sister, Dick (wife: Rheta) Land of New Castle, Ilene (husband: Dave) Pentecost of New Castle and Walt Jr. (wife: Nancy) Land of Bluffton, S.C.; and several nieces and nephews.

The Rev. Kim Perdue will officiate Saturday's service at the church. Burial will follow in South Mound Cemetery. Friends may call from 4-9 p.m. Friday at the Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Chicago Corner Christian Church with envelopes available at the funeral home.
